It’s all too often we see the yacht broker or salesman sell an owner a yacht to which they say, see you later, only to let owners realize they’re not skilled enough and get stuck to resolve the previous owner’s issues.
SAFETY & HOME SLIP SET-UP
Reviewing equipment on board: fire (automatic fire system, portable extinguishers & blankets); life jackets (I, II or III), life ring, throwable line, life rafts and EPIRB; first aid (kits, epi-pens, prescription and otc medicines); Lights (Nav, anchor and spot lights [night op or poor visibility]); & thru hull ball valves (seacocks).
Ensuring that fenders & lines are adequately set up ahead of vessel arrival.
VESSEL SYSTEMS & GEAR
Start up: Panels & Switches (batteries, breakers and fuses); Engines (prestart, start & post arrival); Power (Glendenning shore power & generator operations); Fresh Water (monitor, fill, clean & sanitize); Grey Water (monitor, empty [pump out or over board], clean & sanitize); Black water (monitor, empty [pump out or over board], clean & sanitize); Fuel (monitor & fill); Anchor & Windless (Off/On, Deploy & Retrieve) and Swimplatform (on/off, operations & troubleshooting).
OPERATING: LINES & MANEUVERABILITY
How Operators leave the dock, arrive to the dock, ties to the dock, communicates with crew, plans or reacts to environmental factors (winds & tides), identify, monitor & react to other boats (marina) and reacts to unforeseen issues (lost engine, thruster, etc…).
Rules of the Road
How the Operators Views Other Boats (Head Ons & Crossings - Giveway vs Stand on vs Right of Way, How to pass, how to overtake), Whistle signals (overtake, pass & danger); Bridges & Locks (contacting, clearances, tide boards, right of way and currents); and Emergency situations (NUC, RAM, Sail, Good Seamanship, MOB, May-Day, Security, and Pon-Pon calls).
VESSEL ELECTRONICS
(Basic Operations of a Chart Plotter (navigation, chart options, waypoints, etc..); , Radar (transmit, adjust range, [rain & ocean clutter], gain, target acquiring); Sonar (offset, modes, frequencies, alarms) VHF (volume, squelch, channels, communicate); Emergency Calls, Road Signs & Navigational Signs, Bridge.
MISCELLANEOUS VESSEL OPERATIONS
Start up: HVAC system (monitor, operate & troubleshoot); Toilets (operations, maintenance, do’s & don’ts); A/V system (on/off, equipment modes, sources & troubleshooting);
Shore Power, Fueling, Water Tanks, Pump Out
